What is an Urtext edition, and how different are the scores we perform today from the materials nineteenth-century composers actually worked with? To what extent have musical scores changed or lost information over time? In this seminar, selected works by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Mayer, and Brahms will be examined through sources and different editions from the nineteenth century to the present day. Through the comparison of various editions, the seminar examines how editorial decisions influence modern performance and musical understanding, and how these works can be understood and interpreted today. The seminar approaches these questions from the perspectives of music philology, source studies (Quellenkunde), notation studies (Notationskunde), and nineteenth-century performance practice.

This seminar focuses on the string and piano repertoire of fifteen women composers in the long nineteenth century from a music-historical and performance-based perspective. It examines their biographies, networks, and the historical reception of their music. The seminar will also explore how their music may be interpreted, programmed, and presented to audiences. It will offer participants the opportunity to explore and experience how these works can be integrated into today’s concert settings.
