 In diesem Seminar befassen wir uns mit dem Leben und der Musik einer breiten Auswahl von Komponist:innen der westlichen klassischen Tradition, die der afrikanischen Diaspora angehören. Von Joseph Bologne (1745–1799) bis Florence Price (1887–1953) und von Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912) bis Tania León (* 1943) haben Komponist:innen der afrikanischen Diaspora trotz der Herausforderungen, mit denen sie konfrontiert waren, revolutionäre und bedeutende Werke zur Tradition der westlichen klassischen Musik beigesteuert. Die Studierenden werden Musik in allen Formen kennenlernen: von Liedern bis zu Sinfonien, von Streichquartetten bis zu Opern. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf afroamerikanischen Komponistinnen. Der Kurs regt dazu an, kritisch über den „Kanon” der westlichen Musik und die Vertretung von Komponist:innen der afrikanischen Diaspora in diesem Kanon nachzudenken.

This seminar explores the lives and music of a wide selection of composers in the Western classical tradition who belong to the African Diaspora, beginning in the mid-18th century. From Joseph Bologne (1745-1799) to Florence Price (1887-1953), Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) to Tania León (b. 1943), composers of the African Diaspora have contributed revolutionary and important works to the tradition of Western classical music, despite the challenges that they faced. Students will encounter music in all forms, from songs to symphonies, string quartets to operas. A special focus of the course will be African American female composers. This course encourages students to think critically about the Western music “canon” and how composers of the African Diaspora appear (or do not) in that canon.
