This Vorlesung is taught in blocks. It survey the evolution of classical concert life, focusing on a range of examples which will be selected depending on the students’ instruments but likely to concentrate on concerts of music by Beethoven, the Schumanns and Brahms.

It will explore musicological approaches to the earliest documented professional concerts in the late 18th century, including a consideration of scholarly sources, approaches and limitations. It will trace the gradual evolution of modern concert values and practices in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, including the culture of serious listening, changes in concert programming and expectations of memorisation and stagecraft. Finally, it will consider how concert repertoires and behaviours are diversifying in the 21st century.

With your professional priorities in mind, it will introduce you to new musicological approaches to concerts, including audience and performer research methods.

Teaching will take place in English and German. Teaching will be in person in Stadthalle Raum 2, with some additional meetings online. Students must be available for ALL SESSIONS.

Numbers are limited. Please contact me via email, letting me know what year/semester you are in, and what your instrument is.
